On April 29, the D.C. Zoning Commission will consider whether to rezone a portion of upper Connecticut Avenue in Chevy Chase. This upzoning proposal would increase opportunities for affordable housing in the neighborhood, including at the current site of the Chevy Chase Neighborhood Library and Community Center (Chevy Chase Civic Site). After significant deliberation, the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development (DMPED) is proposing to redevelop the Chevy Chase Civic Site to allow for the long-overdue modernization of the library and community center and new housing. This reflects a small, but important step towards alleviating D.C.’s housing shortage. The median home price in Chevy Chase is more than $1.2 million. Unfortunately, the upzoning is facing significant opposition.
